Take Up The Right Space!

Hod of Hod

Hi everyone, Jordan Drayer, the savvy millennial voice actress who is always learning how to take up the right space in humility. Today is four weeks and five days of the Omer. If you want to know more about the Omer and how it works, check out the links in the description.

Today is Hod of Hod, looking at the expression of our humility itself. Is your humility humble, in other words. Is my humility genuine? There was a time in the past, and I still have vestiges I'm fighting today, where I would do what I call "false modesty."

This would include pretending to not know the answer to things, putting down my talents, like saying, "Oh, I'm not that good at drawing," and overly apologizing or thanking a higher-ranked person, like a teacher, for their time in paying attention to me, like answering a question of mine. Or in explaining why I couldn't go to a thing, I'd give all the reasons or times I couldn't do it, instead of the times I could, which would have been less confusing. So I've learned to stop this. People sometimes say I'm blunt, but I'd rather be clear than putting myself down, and I hate beating around the bush.

Do not beat around the green things

There's a lot of great questions for this one. Basically, do you ever flaunt your humility or take too much pride in it? Is it ever self-serving, as my past battle with false modesty was, trying to get people to feel sorry for or shower me with praise? I'll keep working on my false modesty by speaking up and setting boundaries, volunteering my talents and being grateful for them.

Today's exercise is to be humble for its own sake. If this makes little sense to you, I'd suggest Jewish advice from the 1700s. In one pocket, keep a paper that says, "For my sake was the world created." In the other pocket, keep a paper that says, "I am but dust and ashes." Or maybe write a list of praises for yourself, and for each quality you write down, name two people in your entourage that also have that. Good luck, please like and share, and I'll see you tomorrow.
